Every driver is required to prepare a report for every commercial motor vehicle they drive at the end of the day if there are any safety defects (396.11). Many companies as a best practice will require a report at the end of the day regardless if there are any defects. The pre-trip inspection and this written report are the foundations to an effective maintenance program if done accurately by the driver and acted on by management and the shop.
